Miracles in the Bible, are they “Unscientific”?

Without miracles in the bible, the Christian faith would not even be relevant, other than good lessons from a “good teacher” Jesus. In fact all of the Christian faith hinges on the miracle of Jesus’ resurrection (1 Corinthians 15). The resurrection is foundational to the Christian Faith.

Conventional scientific belief would state that the resurrection, let alone the other miracles found in the bible are indeed “unscientific” According to Wikipedia the scientific method is defines as: The process of the scientific method involves making conjectures (hypotheses), deriving predictions from them as logical consequences, and then carrying out experiments or empirical observations based on those predictions. A hypothesis is a conjecture, based on knowledge obtained while seeking answers to the question.  So according to that definition, miracles are not scientific.

One argument from science would  state that, “miracles are a violation of natural law”. Miracles are not a violation of natural law, as they are acts from a personal God Who cannot be predicted or explained away by processes or natural causes.

Yes, Miracles can be suppressed by people who have no desire to believe such miracles as Jesus changing the water to wine or healing lepers. One such passage of scripture is quite clear that some will not believe in any case:

Luke 16:31 NASB: “But he said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”

As we can see, miracles will not guarantee belief.

How the world operates is described by “natural law” but has no control over it. Natural processes are merely a pattern or template, and do not set anything in motion. It simply describes what happens when there is no agent interfering with casual order. When skeptics claim there is no God they are stating that miracles cannot exist! They put a philosophical roadblock in the way of open thinking.

I will end this with a tidbit of information. The first user and documentarian of the scientific method and set up inductive methods for scientific inquiry was a Christian named Sir Roger Bacon, (1561–1626).

No, the miracles of the bible are not scientific, they are from a loving creator.

Did Jesus Exhibit Divine Authority?

Yes He did. He stated He is the Son of God. Luke 22: 70-71 “70 And they all said, “Are You the Son of God, then?” And He said to them, “Yes, I am.” 71 Then they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”” He used divine titles for Himself, such titles included “I AM” and “Son of Man”, and the Jews of their time knew exactley what He meant. The Jews tried to stone Him to death for blasphemy! In fact, the only charge the Jews had on Him before His crucifixion was that He claimed to be the Christ! Supposed blasphemy was the death penalty!

Here are some examples of Jesus’ divine authority:

1. He commanded demons to leave people, and the demons obeyed Him. Matthew 10:1, Luke 4:36 and Mark 3:15.

2. He calmed the stormy wind and sea with just a short phrase. Matthew 8: 26-27

3. He claimed the authority to forgive sins and trangressions as well as grant people with eternal life. Matthew 9:6, 8 and Mark 2:10

4. He taught with divine authority Mark 1:22, Luke 4:32 and Matthew 7:29

5. He healed lepers, and others with different forms of diseases. Gave the authority to others the abilty to heal.He also resurrected people from death. Mark 5:38-43,Luke 4:39 and John 11:33-34

Yes Jesus is God! Repent and rejoice!

– Casting out of demons; Matthew 8: 28-32
– The healing of lepers; Matthew 15: 22-28
– Healing illness and disease; Luke 17: 14
– Jesus heals the paralytic; Mark 2: 3-12
– He raised the dead; Matthew 9: 25

Can Miracles Be Assessed By Science?

How would one define what a miracle really is? A Dictionary definition of a Miracle is:

1. An effect or extraordinary event in the physical world that surpasses all known human or natural powers and is ascribed to a supernatural cause.
2. Such an effect or event manifesting or considered as a work of God.
3. A wonder; marvel.

From a Christian definition I have heard it be stated; “They are a direct act of a personal God that cannot be predicted or explained by only natural causes”.

The Scottish Philosopher David Hume explained that “Miracles are “violations” of natural laws, and that natural laws cannot be violated”, thus miracles don’t exist! But he was begging the question.

Natural Law explains how the Natural World operates, however it cannot control what happens in it. Science is prescriptive not descriptive as American Philosopher Paul Copan describes. Actually if the entirety of “things” must conform to prior experience then scientific progress would be impossible. Since science currently states, “the Universe came into existence from nothing” how could that have been predicted by natural law?

If the Universe as science explains came into existence from “nothing” how invalid would Jesus walking on the water be? Is that “crazier” than the Universe explanation by science? Jesus’ very resurrection is a historically well supported event. A documented “Miracle”! Jesus appeared to over 500 people after his resurrection to both believers and unbelievers!

This may not be “scientific” as proven in a lab, however, eyewitness evidence is certainly a heavyweight form of evidence!
