Abortion: Is the Bible Quiet on the Subject?

Although the Bible does not directly mention the word “abortion”, one can conclude that abortion is wrong, directly from the pages of the Bible;

1. The Bible reads that it is wrong to murder a person.

Matthew 15:19
19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.

Mark 10:19
19 You know the commandments, ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’”

2. The unborn are persons.

Luke 1: 44
4 For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy.

Psalm 51: 5
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
And in sin my mother conceived me.

3. Jesus was a baby at conception.

Matthew 1: 20
“But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.’” The fact that the angel tells Joseph that “the Child who has been conceived” is “of the Holy Spirit” indicates that Jesus certainly was a person at the moment of conception.

4. The unborn are named children.

Luke 1: 41
“When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.”

5. Scripture states that children are protected by the same punishment as adults are.

Exodus 21: 21-23
“If men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she gives birth prematurely, yet there is no injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman’s husband may demand of him, and he shall pay as the judges decide. But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life .

6. The unborn are known personally by God.

Jeremiah 1: 5
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.

Verses Supporting God’s Sovereignty

The following verses support that God has the right to do with His creation as He desires:

Job: 37: 6-13
6 “For to the snow He says, ‘Fall on the earth,’
And to the downpour and the rain, ‘Be strong.’
7 “He seals the hand of every man,
That all men may know His work.
8 “Then the beast goes into its lair
And remains in its den.
9 “Out of the south comes the storm,
And out of the north the cold.
10 “From the breath of God ice is made,
And the expanse of the waters is frozen.
11 “Also with moisture He loads the thick cloud;
He disperses the cloud of His lightning.
12 “It changes direction, turning around by His guidance,
That it may do whatever He commands it
On the face of the inhabited earth.
13 “Whether for correction, or for His world,
Or for lovingkindness, He causes it to happen.

Psalm 135: 6
6 Whatever the Lord pleases, He does,
In heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps.

Proverbs 16:1
The plans of the heart belong to man,
But the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.

Mark 4: 11-12
1 And He was saying to them, “To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God, but those who are outside get everything in parables, 12 so that while seeing, they may see and not perceive, and while hearing, they may hear and not understand, otherwise they might return and be forgiven.”

John 5:21
21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.

Acts 17:26
26 and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation,

There are many more scriptures to support God’s sovereignty.

Support Verses for Predestination

Whenever a critic wants to suggest that God does not “predestine” individuals for salvation, you can defend the accusations by citing the following verses, and there are much more than these:

Act 2: 22-23; 22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know— 23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.

Acts 4: 27-28; 27 For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose predestined to occur.

Romans 8: 29-30: 29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

Ephesians 1: 4-5; 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will,

Does God Love Everyone?

Does God love everyone? Scripture appears to contradict itself, or does it?
Read Psalm 5:5 The Boastful shall not stand before Your eyes;
You hate all who do iniquity

Now read 1 John 4:8 “The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love

No God does not love everyone. So what about 1 John 4:8? It reads that “God is love” It is in God’s nature to love. It would be a paramount misunderstanding of the scripture to believe that God loves “everyone”.
He does not give a free pass to everyone. Read Romans 9: 15; For He says to Moses,”I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion”

No contradiction.

Does the Bible State That God is the Author of Confusion?

Genesis 11: 7-9 (NASB); 7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language so that they will not understand one another’s speech.” 8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; they stopped building the city. 9 Therefore its name was called Babel because there the Lord confused the language of the whole earth, and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of the whole earth.

1 Corinthians 1: 27 but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong,

According to the above scriptures, God is the author of confusion. The following scripture reads that He is not:

1 Corinthians 14:33; for God is not a God of confusion but of [m]peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

God is not the author of confusion but He approves of order and peace. However, there is no reason to believe that God cannot bring confusion or destruction to the rebels of God’s Word.
Read Deuteronomy 28:15; “But it shall come about, if you do not [o]obey the Lord your God, to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes with which I charge you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:

God can bring confusion to the wicked and those who do not obey the Word of God!

Was it Jesus or God the Father who sent the Holy Spirit?

John 14:25-26; NASB 25 “These things I have spoken to you while abiding with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.

John 15:26; 26 “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me

Some critics will say that the above scriptures contradict themselves. However proper exegesis clearly points to God, (both God and the Son and God the Father) had sent the Holy Spirit. If you read John 15:26, it reads that Jesus sent the “helper” “from” through the Father. By clear reasoning both persons were sending the Holy Spirit.

Was the Tomb of Jesus Never Visited?

Some critics and skeptics have stated and maintain the opinion that the tomb of Christ was never visited. They claim that Jesus appeared “spiritually” to the disciples and not in body, with the crucifixion scars.

This can be refuted by going to the holy scriptures for evidence.

It was the women that first went to the tomb as we read in Mark 16:1;

“When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might come and anoint Him.” The women came to complete the burial procedures. Mark 16:4 continues;
4 Looking up, they *saw that the stone had been rolled away, although it was extremely large.

John arrived next and saw the burial clothes, and then Peter entered the tomb and saw the clothes as well as a face linen.

John 20:3-8, 3 So Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb. 4 The two were running together, and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first; 5 and stooping and looking in, he *saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in. 6 And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7 and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. 8 So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed.

The guards also made a thorough search of the tomb and reported it to the Jewish leaders.

Matthew 28:11, 11 Now while they were on their way, some of the guards came into the city and reported to the chief priests all that had happened.

The guards would not have come to an agreement to lie if they could come up with a viable excuse for the missing body. Saying the tomb was never visited as a theory makes little sense, and certainly does not explain the resurrection appearances and mass conversions of people shortly after that. God be praised!

Second Lease on Life: Is There Life After Death?

After my close call with death last month, it strangely gives more perspective and meaning to life. I as a Christian of course believe in Jesus and His Word, so I don’t have a fear of dying per se, as I know where I will be going after I am gone.

Although I needed to be jolted in the Emergency Room, I did not have any so-called out of body experiences. The only thing besides thanking God to allow me to live, and I have become more unrestrained in sharing God’s Word from the pages of the Bible as to what happens after death.

Here are some of the scriptures associated with the subject of the afterlife. Of course the scripture also speaks of the unimaginable terror of going to hell:

Luke 16:22-23 (NASB)
22 “Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.
23 “In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom.

Revelation 14:11 (NASB)
11 “And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”

John 14:3 (NASB)
3 “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also.

2 Corinthians 5:8 (NASB)
8 we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord.

Philippians 1:21–23 (NASB)
21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
22 But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose.
23 But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better;
