Did the Medieval Church Teach a Flat Earth?

Historical revisionists like to tell the fable of the Medieval Church teaching that the earth is flat. Along with that fable skeptics feel vilified when science proves the Bible incorrect. Is this the case in actuality? No, it is a straw-man argument. As far back as the ancient Greeks, people knew that the earth was round. The whole fable is simply nineteenth century hype.

Oxford Professor Alister McGrath stated, “The idea that science and religion are in perpetual conflict is no longer taken seriously by any major historian of science. One of the last remaining bastions of atheism which survives only at the popular level – namely, the myth that an atheistic, fact-based science is permanently at war with a faith-based religion”

Have the skeptic show you the scripture where a flat earth is taught.

God Bless

  1. Thanks Mr. Mason for this dialogue. I hope it was eye-opening for your readers at least. Curious that you didn’t answer my friendly questions about your pro athlete, music, and theological-academic careers — a chance to shine here. πŸ€”

Btw, do you have a link please to your other blog(s) covering other facets of your success? Thanks.

  2. Okay once again I thank you for your reply and further comments. “I am currently a recording artist with four records (some doing fairly well)…

Goodness. Why don’t you blog about that!? Or at least mention it or link to it on another blog???” I didn’t say that I didn’t have another blog on that course of my life, however this is not the forum. This is a page dedicated to Christian Apologetic’s, not a personal thing. You were implying on a previous comment that you were worldly (paraphrased) and my point was that that doesn’t matter. I like you, want to keep my private life a private life. I don’t see that this dialogue with you has any edifying qualities at this point. I wish you all the best.

1 Corinthians 15 1-4: Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.

3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures

    God Bless

  3. Thanks for that reply Mr. Mason. If I may, I’d like to respond to a few of your points, misinterpretations (again) or contortions of what I wrote, and some of our common ground!

Not just introspection, but equitable extraversions as well, with lots of constrasting, comparing, testing and further expansive questions. It good to read that you get excited about other things in life! You should write about those as well — in equal volume and fairness of course, not just the negatives of non-Christian life as so many Fundamental-Evangy Christians do today. But that’s just my polite suggestion. πŸ˜‰

I was an international professional athlete…

Ah, very good! What sport exactly? I was a lifetime footballer/soccer-player through middle/high school, collegiate, pro (abroad), then semi-pro in the U.S. before retiring in 1998-99. I’m curious to know about YOUR pro career if you are willing to share it.

I am currently a recording artist with four records (some doing fairly well)…

Goodness. Why don’t you blog about that!? Or at least mention it or link to it on another blog???

I was a Stock Broker and was even a pastor. I have studied Theology for the past 30 years as well.

Really? Where did you study your theology, what seminary exactly? For how long as a student? Did you graduate? What church did you pastor and what was its official denomination and mission objective?

I am so very sorry I have disappointed you Mr. Taboo. However I do not write to get anyone excited I write as it is my calling from God to defend the faith. Sorry I disappointed you!

Well, you’re kind to offer an apology, but it isn’t necessary. I certainly don’t blog to appease, or excite blog-readers — well, except for very popular subjects/activities like music, Steampunk, science, and the growing Alternative Lifestyles — as I clearly share on my About page. Many of my readers/Followers are inspired by those posts/pages. πŸ™‚

Your “calling from God to defend the faith” is an extremely popular (over-saturated) field in the U.S. (churches on every single block), and around the world with ALL of the major religions. The funny thing is (regarding just Christianity) there’s only ONE source that needs to be thoroughly understood and studied: the 4th-century CE Hellenistic canonical Bible/New Testament. Not all the vast multitudes of other human interpretations or exegesis of Scripture or how “God’s people” and Holy Spirit move. As Christians have been doing for over 2,000 years, the latter — the endless subjective interpretations/exegesis — only further contaminates, distorts, and convolutes the “claimed” nature of God’s Special Revelation. All Christians should be doing is #1) quoting Scripture (Hebrew, Aramaic, & Greek are best) letting GOD speak, and #2) following exactly or near exactly what their 4th-century CE Hellenistic canon teaches. That’s it! Their omniscient, omnipotent, omnibenevolent, and omnipresent God can EASILY do the rest! In fact, after millions of years of existence and at least 160,000 – 300,000 years of hominids then to us Homo sapiens, it’s unfathomable WHY He hasn’t already done it! If He is who Scripture says He is… why continue the “biblically taught” and/or perceived torture generation after generation after generation? It makes no sense to me as much as it does and has to millions of other humans both past and present.

I hope you enjoy your life.

Already happening! Thank you. The absolute BEST portions of my life have been OUTSIDE of Christianity! The worst years were inside the problematic faith/religion. Although now I’ve turned those years into a POSITIVE helping the thousands of others who are hurting, doubting, and desparately seeking an exit. With my years background in Psych/A&D rehab-therapy it is very similar to helping addicts out of a destructive lifestyle. So I am thrilled, more than a kid in a mega toy/candy store! It’s a VERY good life!

Mom always told me to not trust anyone with a fake name.

Hahahaha! Well, I’m sure there’s nothing I’ve written here to scare you or your Mom. If you mean the wise and popular cliche “Never talk to strangers,” then I believe that applies to in-person encounters. There’s nothing horribly life-threatening that can happen on the internet or on WordPress.

But I think I know what you’re also implying. Many internet authors, bloggers, celebrities, etc, use pseudonyms or aliases for very good reasons. The reason I use one is twofold:

    1) — I live in a very Conservative and often hyper-religious state. Texas is an At-Will employment or labor state; i.e. employers can terminate you giving no explanation or reasons whatsoever. They can also discriminate during hiring practices and performance reviews IF they find out something in your PRIVATE life they personally or religiously don’t like. You see these sorts of illegal discriminatory practices already on the rise with businesses across the nation. And…

    2) — My ex-wife (a Fundy-Evangy Christian who divorced me despite what Scripture teaches) who is the mother of my two incredible children has taken full advantage of Texas Family Law, which is nationally renown for being overly harsh on Fathers in divorces, child-support, and visitation. She has even gone so far as to move 300+ miles away and kept my children from me when I’ve had the legal right to have them (contempt of court), AND she and her parents (also Fundy-Evangy ministers/missionaries) have told my children unnecessary negative stories (sort of like your Mom to you here?) to scare them, put unfounded fear in their hearts/minds.

So as you can clearly see and understand Mr. Mason, I too have excellent reasons to utilize a pseudonym/alias against Fundy-Evangy radical Christians. Fortunately, I only have 7 more months of this when my last child, my son turns 18-yrs old! Then I’ll only have to worry about the state of Texas and their discriminatory (illegal) labor laws. Hahahaha.

I hope you’ll release this reply out of Moderation too because it addresses your misunderstandings and contortions of my last comment-reply, as well as addresses your fear(?) of me. πŸ˜‰

Thanks again for this dialogue. I hope you’ll continue to be open to any/my feedback and questions.

P.S. I never said I have “found unification.” Just because disunity exists in a system doesn’t mean in all cases the reciprocal is absolutely true.

  4. Mr. Professor,
Well I thank you for your introspection. I too get excited about worldly things, I was an international professional athlete, I am currently a recording artist with four records (some doing fairly well), I was a Stock Broker and was even a pastor. I have studied Theology for the past 30 years as well. I am so very sorry I have disappointed you Mr. Taboo. However I do not write to get anyone excited I write as it is my calling from God to defend the faith. Sorry I disappointed you! I hope you enjoy your life. You mention mt “religion’s disunity”? I am glad you have found unification, or so you say.
Mom always told me to not trust anyone with a fake name.
I wish you luck even though I don’t believe in it.

  5. Thank you for that invitation Mr. Mason. The other day I did indeed “explore” your blog and thoroughly explored it this morning. I think you misread and misinterpreted what I wrote and meant by explore. Let me clarify, if I may.

Because of my personality I am passionate about life, philanthropy, laughing, and ALWAYS learning. All of those experiences have been, are, and will always be changing. Therefore, I am constantly curious and asking questions about everything and from/to everyone to learn, learn, learn. This goes for just about all possible subjects, not just one or not just defending an ancient antiquated religion. I am very interested in a number subjects. As I browsed your blog and blog-posts, your blog’s three(?) categories (Frank Turek, Richard Dawkins, Savation (Salvation???), and Uncategorized), as I browsed/read your About page, and then your posts going back to mid-2013 (didn’t make it to Jan 2012 πŸ˜‰ ) it’s all ONE subject: the defense of your “faith.”

Since I get excited about many things in life (music, dancing, sports, all things science to name only 4) and a wide plethora of cultures and people — all of them on Earth if that were possible in a lifetime! — you can imagine my disappointment when I did actually do what you suggest or invited me to do. You see Mr. Mason, I’ve already done everything you write about here on your blog. I’ve already experienced thoroughly everything you’ve been through and now going through. Did it extensively for 11 – 25+ years, including worship, full-time ministries, seminary, apologetics, and missions tours on 4 of the 6 inhabitable continents. I do not need to relive it all again because the Christian “God’s” Word never changes (Isaiah 40:6-8) and that Word and Holy Spirit is supported by, confirmed or denied, by Scriptures, i.e. today’s popular bibles of the 4th-century Hellenistic canon. None of those canonical Scriptures have changed since the 4th-century CE… despite the fact that Chrstianity/Christology has morphed into multiple versions and some 400 – 2,500 different denominations. The origins and adolescence of Christianity is more bizarre (let alone unknown today) and convoluted by at least 3-4 major 1st-century cultures clashing that is NEVER discussed or divulged in today’s churches or seminaries. It’s crazy. LOL

Hence, me alluding to the/your religion’s disunity is only one demonstration out of MANY problems and failures based upon previous problems and failures that go back to at least Second Temple Judaism/Messianism.

Conclusion? I appreciate your invitation Mr. Mason, but I will pass. I have moved way beyond that life and I am now living the best life I could’ve ever imagined free and liberated to be an important part of humanity on this remarkable existence on Earth with a spectacular, exciting future ahead!!!

Btw, I will extend an invitation to you as well to visit and immerse yourself in my blog. I have multiple subjects and categories I write about and discuss with fellow humans. I suggest starting with and going thru “My Library” tab on my main menu and my About page; just for starters.

    Thanks Mr. Mason.

  6. OK, great. My apologies, I must have misunderstood you. Sorry for any confusion.

You understand then that humans evolved, so my question was: do you believe humans are still evolving?
