“The Four Agreements”: A Christian Response

Don Miguel Ruiz a “spiritualist” and “New Ager” penned the best seller book “The Four Agreements”. It has developed quite a following and people seem to be lapping it up like sweet milk, but what should a Christian’s reaction be to this book? Oprah Winfrey had Don Miguel Ruiz on her show and she also believes in the fundamental points of this book. So what are “The Four Agreements”?
They are based upon the ancient people of Southern Mexico that followed “Toltec Wisdom” *”The Toltec viewed science and spirit as part of the same entity, believing that all energy – material or ethereal – is derived from and governed by the universe.”

1. Be impeccable with your word – that is, speak with great integrity, avoid gossip and say only what you mean.

2. Don’t take anything personally – that is, whatever anyone says to you is only a projection of their own reality it is their own dream. Huh? Seriously that is what he is trying to get you to buy.

3. Don’t make assumptions – he claims that this agreement will in itself change your life. He says to communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, basically express exactly what you want.

4. Always do your best – subjected to any circumstance, simply do your best, so you will avoid self-judgment, regret and self-abuse.

As a Christian, my first and main response would be that it is a very self-centered philosophy. It fits the Oprah mantra of “ME, ME, ME” very well, and that would likely be why she had him on her television show. It was definitely a beneficial move for both of them. Basically it is narcissistic self worship, a form of idolatry. It is self- help that does not involve God and even the shunning of God.
It reeks of Shamanism. Shamanism believes that all energy – material or ethereal originates from and governed by the universe. It entails that everything has a spirit and everything is alive, clouds, rivers, dirt, as well as animals and people. It is defined that all things that have spirits are equal with us.
It is plainly sorcery! Let’s see what God has to say about this type of divination and selfishness;

Deuteronomy 18:10 “There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer.”

Leviticus 19:26 “‘You shall not eat anything with the blood, nor practice divination or soothsaying.”

Galatians’ 5: 19-21, The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Philippians 2:3, Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,

Oprah Winfrey and Don Miguel Ruiz both do not agree with (at the time of this writing) Jesus’ words in John 14:6,
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

We must pray that the followers of this Shamanism have a conversion experience and become followers of Christ and cease this distortion of the truth.
God Bless
Brian Mason

  1. Toltec spiritualism is not even close to being biblical, in fact divination is strictly verboten! Ruiz is a self proclaimed shaman. Shamanism is nothing other than demonic ocultic self-worship. I will not give you a lesson on the subject so I implore you to do some research on the subject. I am not being quick to judge (don’t even know how you know the length of time I have researched this), but God does the judging not me. I do hope you read his bone throwing book(s) and not take MY word for it. Lev 19: 26 …“‘Do not practice divination or seek omens. Deut 18: 9-13 9 When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you. 13 You must be blameless before the Lord your God.
    Thanks for your comment.

Though I have not read this book the four points as I understand them are quite Biblical. Are we not to be people of integrity with healthy boundaries, who value a yes being yes and a no being no? I think that you are quick to judge. I understand that spiritualism can be dangerous if not guided by the Spirit but if a Christian has a firm grasp on the biblical teachings I feel these four tenants only confirm the biblical truths. I am now more compelled to read the writings of this gentleman now due to stumbling over your position.

No one comes to the Father except through Christ. There is no truth apart of this and though I won’t pick this book up for the sake of salvation I have that I will certainly have a practical application of many of the truths Christ was principled on.

    Good day.

  3. Labelle: I will not post links to ridiculous videos. If you want to comment please feel free.

  4. I have received a comment recently that ALL religions have the same god. This is absolutely wrong, The Christian God is the only God! The Christian God is a Trinity. Islam has no such god, nor Hindi, etc…. I strongly recommend learning some theology if you think any differently!
God Bless~ In the name of Jesus …. Repent!

  5. Thank you so much for your comments Craig. To start with my name is spelled BRIAN. I cannot help but notice your hostility and I don’t believe that is one of the “4 Agreements”? First “how should”; A Christian SHOULD not believe in bone throwing shamanism. This article has nothing to do with me whatsoever. If you have wrestled this out with God and you came to this “agreement” then I would say that the god you were wrestling with was not the God of the Bible! And believe me that God does care and love you and is TOTALLY against such sorcery! Instead of wrestling with God, why not read His word? Don M. will go to hell if he does not repent of his sins, just like anyone else, including you and me! If you are passing this on to others you better be certain what it is is the Truth. Jesus is the Way the Truth and the Life! If my article scares “Christians” away then they were never Christians to begin with! Peace and Love to you as well…

Brain Mason writes: but what “”SHOULD”” a Christian’s reaction be to this book? Tell us Brian..What “”SHOULD”” my reaction be to the Four Agreements – What “should” I believe , what “Should” I read, watch, write, say ????? You are selfish and narcissistic for projecting your own revelations onto other people and saying that what you think “should” be “the answer” ….I am saddened by this as this is arrogant and egotistical and you are using the bible to argue something that God probably doesn’t even care about in reality. I have wrestled the four agreements out with God and he has revealed to me that I should impart this knowledge onto other people because some people are in a different places of receiving teaching and The Four Agreements is based on love not all this nonsense you say it is. Sorcery hahahahahahaha Are you living in the old testament Bud!! Because Jesus came to fulfill that with the new testament…… Anyways Brian …I love you bro but you dont need to be so cut and dry with your belief systems it will hold you back in life – Which God wants you to live Abundantly!! Everyone can use Don Miguels book and make there lives so much better – It is far more practical than the bible with a different wisdom – Dont Shone it – Love it and use it to make what you already know stronger. You sound like a well versed guy – i am not – But I know how to love – Just keep on doing that. Dont be noninclusive – Because you will scare Christians away…Dude Im good at writting or arguing all I know is what I feel and what God tells me and Im feeling like God is telling me to tell you to stop trying so hard with defending His word and be more loving in the way you deal with it. PEace and love bro….

  7. Thanks for your comment. Perhaps you could explain to me what it was that I missed? The book is narcissistic self worship. That is the sin of idolatry. This is a Christian Apologetics blog that not only is used as a defense of the Christian Faith but warns of satanic teaching such as Shamanism, Buddhism etc.
Deuteronomy 18:10 “There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer.”
God Bless and I hope you will follow the true Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Uhh… I think you really missed the point of his book..
I don’t really feel like explaining to you exactly how because I believe it won’t do any good.
I just think that you’re seeing this the wrong way….
    anywho. God bless you anyway!

  9. Thank you for your comment. I would like to address your text, “It’s really not as self-centered as you proclaim,”. How self-centered do you have to be to be self-centered?”. Next you state “Your comments make you sound like a religious fanatic”. Would you consider Shamanism religious, or spiritual? Could you please define your statement?
You are very correct about Christianity being exclusive, and why should the truth be anything else? Jesus says “He is the Way the Truth and the Life ” yes that is exclusive without any doubt. You are also correct in the fact that the Bible “The Word of God” states that homosexuality is a sin that will deserve a lake of fire, as well as lying, and adultery … Take that up with God. I pray for you to see the light and pray for forgiveness as I do EVERYDAY as I am a sinner!
Explain to me how being “a little self-serving” is better than Jesus saying “It is better to give your life for a friend…?
    God Bless

  10. You have completely missed the value of Ruiz’s book. It’s really not as self-centered as you proclaim, in fact in one of the chapters, he states that in making assumptions, it’s a form of self-absorption because you’re assumming that everything is about you. I don’t see how a man who encourages us to be people of integrity and to always work hard is a sorcerer. Your comments make you sound like a religious fanatic. While it’s good to be discerning of new age literature, it’s also important for you to see the value in it, at least it’s more inclusive than christianity. Nothing about new age philosophy shuns other beliefs, while the bible condemns marriages between gays, it condemns time spent with non-disciples among other things…

  11. What psychological issues are you addressing? Being “steered away” from self=centered shamanism would be a good start. There are Christian Psychologists out there as well, and it would of course go back to what the psychological issues are/is?

  12. Dee ⋅

What books would you recommend reading (apart from the Bible) to Christians going through psychological issues? We are steered away from books such as these but never get recommendations which are useful with Christian perspectives.
